Violence in the Workplace

The following information was  located after much research. 
We offer these "facts" as information only. 
Our goal is to bring an awareness to the problem and heighten the need to take action to correct these alarming statistics.

(2001) Violence in the Workplace Bureau of Justice Statistics

  • In the last 10 years, the U.S. averaged 850 workplace homicides a year.
  • 18% of all violent crime in America occurs in the workplace.
  • 80% of workplace homicides are committed with a firearm.
  • 75% of workplace violence involves assault crimes.
  • 19% of workplace victimizations involve a serious injury.
  • 60% of workplace victimizations involve members of the same race.
  • 8 in 10 acts of workplace violence involve a lone offender.
  • 46% of workplace victimizations are reported to the police.
  • 24% of sexual assaults at work are reported to the police.
  • 7% of the homicides at work are committed by co-workers.
  • 4% of the homicides at work are committed by clients/customers.
  • 40% of victims of non-fatal workplace violence knew their offender.
  • 37% of workplace violence cases that are reported result in an arrest.
  • Of the 850 homicides that occur at work in an average year, 100 involve employee relationships and 50 involve domestic relationships.

  • 33% of victims quit their job because of the bullying.
  • 37% of victims of workplace bullying were eventually fired.
  • 17% of victims were transferred to other positions in the organization.
  • 9% of workplace bullies were transferred or terminated.
  • 25% of victims were members of a ‘protected class’ under federal laws.
  • 71% of workplace bullies were supervisors.
  • 17% of victims experienced ‘mobbing’ by some co-workers.
  • 23% of workplace bullies operated alone.
  • 64% of victims experienced ‘the silent treatment’ and were ostracized.
  • 46% of workplace bullies abused the job performance evaluation process.
  • 45% of victims were charged with insubordination.
  • 37% of victims had their paycheck or earned benefits interfered with.
  • 14% of workplace bullying involved sexual aggression.
  • 22% of victims experienced uninvited searches of their offices and/or e-mails.
  • 26% of workplace abuse cases involve a disability claim.
  • 23% of victims experienced chest pains and heart irregularities.
  • 32% of victims report that they work in a ‘hostile work environment’.
  • 76% of victims experienced high levels of stress that impacted their health.
  • 25% of victims had thoughts of being violent towards others.

  • 50% of workplace bullies are women.
  • 77% of victims of workplace bullying are women.
  • 44% of victims of workplace bullying were ultimately fired from their jobs.
  • 7% of workplace bullies were punished, transferred or terminated.
  • 33% of victims of workplace bullying suffered panic attacks.
  • 46% of victims who reported being bullied experienced retaliation.
  • 30% of victims said they worked in a ‘culture’ of bullying, where such behavior often leads to promotion.
  • 62% of victims were not members of a ‘protected class’ under federal laws.
  • 41% of victims were diagnosed with some form of depression.
  • 21% of victims had thoughts of being violent and/or committing suicide.
  • 51% of victims lost significant income because of the bullying.
  • 42% of victims report that the bully’s boss participated in the bullying.
  • 11% of the victims report that some co-workers ‘mobbed’ them.
  • 37% of victims of workplace bullying consulted an attorney.
  • 19% of victims of workplace bullying filed a lawsuit against their employer.
  • 38% of victims left their job voluntarily because of the bullying.

(2000) Destructive Conflict in the Workplace

  • 28% of employees took sick leave because of stress-related illnesses.
  • 33% of employees who witnessed bullying experienced physical health problems.
  • 22% of employees who witnessed bullying left their jobs because of it.
  • Victims of bullying at work use 7 more sick days per year.
  • Witnesses to bullying at work use 2.5 more sick days per year.
  • 41% of workplace bullying included ‘mobbing’ by some co-workers.
  • 10% of employees reported sexual harassment at work in the last 6 months.
  • 58% of teachers report witnessing workplace bullying in the last 5 years.
  • 75% of workplace bullies were managers and/or front-line supervisors.
  • 24% of employees report being bullied at work in the last 5 years.
  • 34% of new supervisors exhibited bullying behaviors.

People continue the same behavior until it is no longer tolerated.
