ATTITUDE
and ACCEPTANCE.
People
with type 2 diabetes can live long, healthy lives by working closely with their
doctors and following the treatment prescribed for them. People who follow the
treatment specifically designed to fit their needs feel better and are more in
control of their lives
BLOOD
PRESSURE. If it's too high, it can lead
to heart disease and stroke. About 63% of adults with diabetes have high blood
pressure. According to the American Diabetes Association, your blood pressure
should be below 130/80 mmHg.
CHOLESTEROL.
Many people with diabetes have high levels of "bad" cholesterol (LDL
cholesterol) or low levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL cholesterol). So
it's important for your healthcare provider to check the levels of fat and
cholesterol in your blood. This test is called a lipid profile, and you may want
to talk to your healthcare provider about it. According to the American Diabetes
Association, the suggested target number for LDL cholesterol is below 100 mg/dL.
Have your cholesterol checked at least once a year.
DIET IS ESSENTIAL.
Everyone needs
to practice good eating habits, but it's especially important for people with
diabetes. We all need to eat a balance of carbohydrate, protein, and fat. What
and how much food you eat, and when you eat it, affects your blood glucose
levels. How much food you need will depend on your height, weight, age, gender,
and activity level. Always consult with your Physician and Dietician before
making any diet changes. If your
goal is to maintain your weight and get or stay
healthy, this program can work for you too. Click here - check out Bistro MD for healthy balanced fast meals, delivered to your home- get started today!

EXERCISE
Exercise experts recommend 20 to 30 minutes of exercise—plus another 10 or 20
minutes to warm up and cool down— 4 or 5 times a week. Be sure to talk to your
doctor before beginning or changing your exercise program. Your doctor and
diabetes-care team can help you plan an exercise program that is right for you.
Fun.
Keep the fun in your life. Stay active in your favorite hobbies and
past-times. Spend time with friends. Do things to keep a smile on your
face.
GLYCEMIC
INDEX. All foods are
converted to glucose (blood sugar) to be used as fuel by your body. What doesn't
get used as energy gets stored as fat. Some foods - like beans, whole grains,
and non-starchy vegetables - release glucose slowly because they break down
slowly. White table sugar raises your blood sugar level the fastest. The
Glycemic Index (GI) measures how much and how fast 50 grams of a certain food's
carbohydrate content raises your blood sugar level. At first, when researchers
wanted to determine how fast certain foods cause a rise in blood sugar levels
they used table sugar as their base number . But most people didn't like eating
pure sugar, so researchers began using white bread as their base. White bread
raises blood sugar levels about 70 percent as much as table sugar.
Today,
table sugar and white bread are used almost interchangeably as a base for
glycemic level research. It's important for you to know which was used as the
base (sugar or white bread), because the GI numbers will differ. For example,
pinto beans and plums have a GI of 55 if white bread is the base, but a GI of 39
if sugar is the base. Unfortunately, not all GIs identify what was used
|
Diabetics
might find a food's GI useful in helping plan meals. Still, the best way to keep
blood sugar levels under control is to exercise regularly, eat high-fiber,
non-starchy foods, and avoid saturated and trans fats.
